Tell
me, were you a reader before you were a writer? What do you enjoy reading?
Oh my goodness yes!
I’ve been reading my whole life.
My parents were divorced when I was very young and my Dad and I would
bond over books. We would read the same
ones and then talk about them on the phone.
It gave us something to connect over.
Because of this, I was reading adult books at a very young age and
always being pushed to analyze and discuss what I read. Its made me a critical reader and a real
lover of the written word.
Is
Two Moons of Sera the first book
you’ve written
No. My first
published work was Consumed by Love which
is a novella. 2MOS is a serial novel, so I’ve been releasing it in parts since
November of last year. In the midst of
that Shadow on the Wall was
released. I guess I’m always up to
something and have really varied interests, so one book at a time just isn’t
enough
Where
their some particular inspirations for Sera’s development or character traits
for Two Moons of Sera?
With the character of Sera, I really wanted to explore
the idea of isolationism. What affect
would being raised in exile have on a person?
In order to solidify her isolation, I’ve also created a back story and
genetic situation which makes Sera the only one of her kind. Completely unique and susceptible to hatred
from all sides.
What kind of person would survive that? It could easily make you angry and bitter, or
afraid and timid. In Sera’s case though,
her mother’s unconditional love and sacrifice have taught her to embrace who
she is. The question then is, what
happens when she’s confronted with the very people she was hiding from?
There
are many roads that lead to becoming a published author, each one littered with
its own potholes. What was the most challenging aspect of writing Two Moons of Sera?
Two
Moons of Sera is a big story. When I began working on it, the ideas and
characters were very clear and laid out.
I had it somewhat plotted and was sure it would be a decent sized book
but nothing overwhelming. And then I
started writing. I’m now well over
80,000 words in and only ¾ of the way done with what will be the first
book. Since it’s been released as a
serial novel, Volumes 1-3 are available now and Volume 4 will come out
soon.
I had no idea that the characters would take on such a
vivid life of their own when I started.
Now it’s like I can’t stop! I’m
planning on a second book and perhaps a pre-quil.
How
did you tackle this challenge?
I threw my plans out the window and went with what the
characters and story demanded. Its
always better to trust the voices in your head, they’re way smarter :)
Being
an author is so much more than just writing a good story. Besides the “pen and
ink,” what is one of the most difficult things you’ve encountered on your
journey as a published author? What helped you get a handle on it?
The constant need to figure out how to talk about my
book in new ways and not let my answers to questions like your become either
stagnant or give too much away!
It
